Inoa: Namahana
In much of the literature and moʻolelo (stories) available to us today there are two interpretations for the name Namahana. It has been referred to as both "twin peaks" (na meaning the, and māhana meaning twins), and the “gathering place of chiefs”, both befitting of this majestic mountain range. The formation of Namahana is shaped in such a way that embraces the ua (rain clouds) thus providing wai (water), the vital life force that nurtures our ‘aina and its people.
History
Namahana Farms began as just that. In 1977, the late Ben Dyre developed the area into one of the largest fruit and vegetable farms on Kaua‘i. At the time, Namahana was Kauai's largest banana producer—over 1.5 million lbs a year. Namahana Farms was also one of the Island’s largest cucumber and greenhouse tomato producers.
After Kaua‘i bared the brunt of Hurricane Iwa in 1982, which destroyed the crops and the infrastructure of the active farm, Ben decided not to rebuild the farm operation—and instead created this beautiful agricultural subdivision, which many now proudly call home. His ‘ohana continues to live at Namahana Farms and are grateful to be able to raise their children there.
Today, Namahana Farms is home to a vibrant residential community of 44 CPR units, known for its lush greenery and stunning mountain views. The community remains deeply connected to its rich history and the farming traditions of its past.
Good Neighbor Policy
Namahana Farms Community Association is dedicated to promoting a friendly and welcoming community for all of our residents. Since inception of the Namahana Farms Subdivision, our residents have humbly embraced their kuleana (responsibility) to our community at large by communicating respectfully and directly with fellow neighbors to resolve issues that may arise. This is one of the many remarkable characteristics of our tight-knit community, which speaks to the integrity of our residents. With continued homeowner cooperation and aloha spirit, Namahana Farms will always be a safe, peaceful and beautiful place to call home.
